A bold and bright wine with an eye catching label, Elefante Tempranillo Shiraz is a fantastic Spanish red at a reasonable price. Sourced from the dry and unyeilding plains of Castilla la Mancha in the north of Spain, the wine is made by Javier Murua with the aim of creating affordable Spanish wines of true quality and character.
The vast, high and dry plains of Castilla la Mancha comprise over 50% of Spain’s vineyards. The ancient soils and high altitude ensures the richly flavoured fruit maintains structure and tannin. Vineyards planted on the slopes of mountain ranges in the north and north east add a degree of elegance to the wines.
A core of ripe and intensely flavoured Tempranillo was given a long and cool maceration in vats before maturation in stainless steel. A component of Tempranillo underwent Carbonic maceration to maximise fruit vibrancy. Shiraz added mid palate intensity and overall fruit weight. Finally a portion of Rioja Tempranillo aged in new American oak adds complexity and structure.
Bold and bright, with new world fruit richness matched by old world complexity and tannins. A deep, dark red colour is followed by a lifted nose packed with red berry and spice. The palate is impressively ripe and structured without a hint of greenness. A swirling array of flavours flow from initial supple red berries and liquorice to herbal notes and savoury complexity. Oak influences are in the background but provide structure and definition.
